Alexandria Finishes Fourth At State

By Kyle Gylsen
St. Paul (Xcel Energy Center)

The season came to an end for the Alexandria girls' hockey team with a 4-1 loss Saturday to South St. Paul in the third place game at the Class A State Tournament.

Packer's sophomore Sam LaShomb scored the first two goals of the game.  Her first goal, a powerplay goal, was also credited as the first shot of the game.  Two shots later, LaShomb landed a puck in the back of the net giving the South St. Paul a two-goal advantage going into the second period.

Alexandria junior Claire Illies scored her second goal of the tournament, assisted by Heather Hvezda, to bring the Cardinals within one.  Before the period was over South St. Paul ninth-grader Riley Viner scored her fourth tournament goal to make the score 3-1.

With half a second left in the game, LaShomb completed a hat-trick with her third period, short-handed, empty net goal, giving her four goals for the tournament.

Stephanie Drown made 20 saves in the game.

Alexandria finished the season with a record of 14-14-2.
