'Streaks Win Sub-Section Title

By John Stigman/Kyle Gylsen
Glenwood

Osakis won the Section 5A/West Sub-sectin championship with a 12-4 victory over Kimball Area in Glenwood on Thursday.

"We hit the ball very very well today," stated Silverstreaks' head coach John Stigman.  "And we hit it where they weren’t standing.

"We are very proud of this team for this accomplishment.  We have had this game in our sites all season and we are happy we got the chance to play it, and even happier that we we won it!"

Osakis broke open a tight game with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.  After the Cubs answered with two runs of their own in the top of the fifth, the 'Streaks put the game away with a four run sixth inning.

"We had, top to bottom, everyone contributing," Stigman explained.  "Our 7-8-9 hitters, Kiera Zimmel, Janna Juntunen and Dani Chisholm, were outstanding today and had nine out of our 18 hits. That’s great production from the backside of our batting order."

Juntunen went 4-for-4 in the contest with two runs and one RBI.  Zimmel was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI, while Chisholm went 2-for-4 and one run scored.

Sabrina Zimmel and Brianne Giesler both went 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Mercedes Klimek hit a homerun and had three RBI.  Hailey RajdlLauren SilbernickAlex Anderson and Tonya Hetland also had one hit apiece for Osakis.

Sabrina Zimmel earned the pitching victory once again.  She allowed seven hits and walked, while striking out one.

"Sabrina pitched another very solid game and defensively we did a great job of minimizing their scoring chances," Stigman added.  "They had runners on in five of the seven innings, but we minimized each threat.  Giving up a couple runs, but keeping them from a big inning each time.  Our pitcher and our defense did a nice job minimizing each threat with a good pitch or a good play.

The Silverstreaks will now play Barnum at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 1 at Whitney Park in St. Cloud.  The Bombers also enter the four-team Section 5A tournament unbeaten.

Braham and Kimball Area will also play at 5:00 p.m. in an elimination game.  The winner will play the Osakis/Barnum loser at 7:00 p.m.  The winner of that game will face the Osakis/Barnum winner for the Section 5A championship at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 3.
