Panthers Advance To Title Game

By Kyle Gylsen
Pillager

The Parkers Prairie Panthers advanced to the Section 6A softball tournament championship game with an 8-6 victory over Hawley Tuesday in Pillager.

The loss ended the Nuggets' 15-game winning streak.  The Panthers were the number three seed in the 6A/South Sub-section, while Hawley was the North Sub-section champion.

Parkers Prairie took an early lead when freshman Madison Dorn hit a bases-loaded triple with two outs in the top of the first inning.

The score remained 3-0 until Hawley scored a run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Panthers appeared to put the game out of reach with five runs in the top of the seventh inning.  Jazmyn Dorn led off with a single, but was forced out at second on a groundout by Sari NogaKendra Klimek doubled, with Noga stopping at third.  Tamara Schmidt walked to load the bases and Madison Dorn followed with a  two-run single.  Morgan Flanigan and Shanon Bjerketvedt then delivered RBI singles before the inning came to an end with Parkers Prairie leading 8-1.

But the defending Section 6A champions were about to make things very interesting.

The Nuggets used five singles, two walks and an error to score five runs of their own to pull to within 8-6.  Hawley had runners at second and third, with the winning run at the plate, when Jazmyn Dorn caught a soft line drive at short to end the game.

Sari Noga held on for the win.  She allowed six runs on eight hits on three walks, while striking out one.

Sophomore Jessy Noreen took the loss for the Nuggets.  She gave up all eight runs on 11 hits and three walks, but struck out seven.  Her seventh-grade sister Jody Noreen faced three batters and got the final two outs in the top of the seventh inning.

Madison Dorn went 3-for-4 with five RBI and one run scored for the Panthers.  Noga, Klimek and Flanigan each had two hits, while Jazmyn Dorn and Bjerketvedt had one hit apiece.

Aundie Softing led the Nuggets with two hits, including one double, and two runs scored.

Parkers Prairie (12-9) will face Menahga (9-15) in the championship game.  The Lady Braves upset Bertha-Hewitt 6-1 in the other semifinal Tuesday.
