The Staples-Motley Cardinals' baseball team ran its current winning streak to 10 games with a 10-2 non-conference victory at Browerville/Eagle Valley Monday.
"A beautiful day for baseball," said Cardinals' head coach John Riewer. "It felt like July. Hot, humid and windy."
Staples-Motley scored five runs on five hits in the first inning. Alex Jansson, Trevor Smith and Gunner Johnson each doubled, while Brandon Haglin and Colton Hill had singles. Jordan Riewer had an RBI groundout, with Johnson also getting an RBI on his two-bagger and Hill driving in two with his basehit.
Jansson singled to lead off the second and scored on an RBI triple by Johnson to give the Cardinals a 6-0 lead.
Browerville/Eagle Valley got on the board in the bottom of the second inning when Austin Host stroked a one-out double and the next batter, Austin Wollenburg, singled.
Staples-Motley scored two more runs in the top of the fourth. Once again, it was Jansson who got things going, this time with a walk. One out later, Riewer singled. After a sacrifice fly by Johnson and a walk to Dylan Shequen, Haglin walked with the bases load to force in a Jansson and Hill followed with an RBI single to score Riewer and make the score 8-1.
Host got his second double and third hit of the game leding off the home half of the sixth for the Broncos. Trenton Wollenburg brought him home with a one-out single to cut the lead to 8-2.
The Cardinals closed out the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning. Chad Beebe led off with a walk, Robbie Warner laid down a sacrifice bunt and Jansson walked. Beebe scored on a groundball off the bat of Smith that was misplayed for an error. Jansson scored when Riewer hit into a fielder's choice.
Jansson started on the hill for the Cards and earned the win. He pitched 4-2/3 innings and allowed one run, six hits and three walks, while striking out seven. Riewer faced on batter in a fourth inning and got a strikeout. Jeremy Hoemberg took the hill for the final two innings. He gave up one run on two hits with one strikeout.
Host took the loss for Browerville/Eagle Valley. He allowed five runs on five hits, while striking out one and walking one. Joey Gaida pitched 2-2/3 innings, Nathan Heid threw 1-1/3 and Austin Wollenburg tossed two innings for the Broncos.
"We continue to play great team baseball," coach Riewer stated. "We received quality pitching and great team defense. We hit the ball extremely well with four doubles and a triple.
